Power and Control Wheel

The United Nations defines violence against women as “Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, includingthreats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”

An abuser maintains power and control through the use of intimidation, isolation, humiliation, blame or physical violence to make you go along with everything he says and does. Despite what many people believe, domestic violence and abuse is not about the abuser’s loss of control over his behaviour – it’s a deliberate choice made by the abuser in order to control you.
